A product marketing director is a person that is in charge of the company’s marketing and promotion strategies for a specific product or product line. The marketing director is responsible for overseeing all marketing activities related to the product, including research, analysis, planning, and implementation of the strategies.

Then, the job of a director may include:

  1. Researching and analyzing market trends, demographics, economics, and consumer behavior
  2. Developing product positioning strategy to ensure that the product stays competitive in the market
  3. Then, analyze the competition to determine how their products are positioned against your own

Nowadays, many product marketers work more than 40 hours per week. They may work evenings, weekends, or holidays for special promotions or meet tight deadlines. Also, the hours vary depending on the company’s needs. Some firms may require their product marketers to work extra hours when they need them. Also, they may require them to travel a lot or stay overnight in hotels.

What does it take to be one? Firstly, you need to know how to:

  • Explain complex technical information in an easy-to-understand way
  • Write and deliver effective presentations
  • Then, work with account and vendor representatives to ensure fulfillment of marketing programs
  • Analyze data, interpret trends, and use research results to plan product-related activities
  • Also, I have excellent verbal and writing skills.
  • They should also have good interpersonal skills because they will be interacting with internal and external customers. 
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and computer skills are also very important.
  • Finally, experience with knowledge of software applications is also necessary.

Being a recent college graduate is not a drawback since most new product marketing directors are relatively young. However, it would be great if you have some experience from another job that would be useful in this position.
