TechCrunch is a Silicon Valley based blog that started in 2005. It quickly became a very popular and influential blog–so much so that it was acquired by AOL in June of 2008.

TechCrunch is known for its ability to influence the direction of the tech business. For instance, at TechCrunch Disrupt in 2013, Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook’s plans to develop a privacy-focused messaging app called “Project Spartan” (later to be renamed Messenger). The product launched in February 2014 and has since become one of the most popular messaging apps on iOS and Android.

TechCrunch has also had a history of making controversial statements about Bitcoin, though their coverage of the subject has been increasingly positive over time. In 2013, TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington published an article titled “Bitcoin Is More Likely to Get People Killed Than Take Over the World”.
